Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially handed over to May Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner, as the Acting Chair of INEC.
This development comes as Yakubu proceeds on terminal leave, with Agbamuche set to oversee the commission’s activities until a substantive chairman is appointed.
Yakubu, who has been at the helm of INEC since 2015 and was reappointed for a second term in 2020, had initially prepared to step down in July but was directed by President Bola Tinubu to serve out his full term while a successor is being searched for.
The handover ceremony took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where Yakubu solicited the support of commissioners and directors for Agbamuche.
