The Federal Government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to put its planned strike on hold, assuring that it is committed to resolving all outstanding issues raised by the union.
Minister of Education Tunji Alausa stated that progress is being made in ongoing negotiations and the government is working to address ASUU’s demands.
The government has reconstituted the Mahmud Yayale Ahmed Federal Government Tertiary Institutions Expanded Negotiation Committee to facilitate talks with academic and non-academic unions.
ASUU had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, which is set to expire on Sunday, and has begun mobilizing its members for a possible nationwide warning strike.
The union is demanding better funding for universities, improved welfare for lecturers, and implementation of previous agreements.
If the government fails to meet their demands, ASUU may proceed with a two-week warning strike followed by an indefinite strike.
