Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, will be aiming to reignite their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign when they face France in their second Group D encounter on Wednesday (today) in Salé, Morocco, after a disappointing 4–1 loss to Canada in their opening match.
The West Africans endured a tough start to the tournament, undone by defensive errors despite a spirited performance that saw Queen Joseph score Nigeria’s only goal. The defeat left them bottom of Group D with zero points and a –3 goal difference, making tonight’s clash a must-win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The meeting with France carries historical weight — the last time both teams met was 13 years ago at the 2012 World Cup in Azerbaijan, where Nigeria held the French to a goalless draw before bowing out 5–3 on penalties in the quarter-finals.
France, who began their campaign with a convincing 4–2 victory over Samoa, will pose a formidable challenge with their fluid attacking play and tactical discipline. But Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere insists his side has learned from their opening defeat and is ready to respond.
Flamingos captain Shakirat Moshood expressed confidence that the team has regrouped mentally and is prepared to bounce back.
“We are not happy about our first game, but for the second match against France, we are going to win because we are ready for them,” Moshood told NFF media. “We’ve worked very hard for this match. By the grace of God, we will win.”
The skipper also appealed to fans for patience and support, promising a stronger display. “We are sorry for the first game. We promise to do better and make Nigerians proud and happy,” she added.
In training, Olowookere has focused on improving the team’s defensive organisation and game management, addressing the lapses that cost them against Canada. Monday’s recovery session was replaced with motivational talks, team-building activities, and video analysis to boost morale.
In a show of solidarity, Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Joy Omewa, Taiwo Afolabi, Miracle Usani, and Folashade Ijamilusi sent in video messages to motivate the young girls ahead of the crucial showdown.
The Flamingos’ clash against France kicks off at 8 p.m. Nigerian time, with victory now their only path to survival in the competition.
