The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that eight political associations have successfully completed the initial phase of registration to become political parties, while six others failed to meet the required criteria.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday following the commission’s regular meeting held on October 30, 2025.

According to the statement, the commission reviewed progress made since its last update on September 11, noting that 14 associations were pre-qualified to participate in the process, which began with a briefing on September 17.

A dedicated online portal for the submission of required documents was open between September 18 and October 18.

“As of Saturday, October 19, 2025, eight out of the 14 pre-qualified associations successfully completed the upload of all necessary information and documentation,” INEC said.

The qualified associations include:

  • All Democratic Alliance
  • Citizens Democratic Alliance
  • Abundance Social Party
  • African Alliance Party
  • Democratic Leadership Alliance
  • Green Future Party
  • National Democratic Party
  • Peoples Freedom Party

INEC stated that the next phase of the process will involve a detailed verification and assessment of the documents submitted by the associations to ensure compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the commission’s regulations for political parties.

“The next step in the registration process is the detailed assessment and verification of the information and documents submitted by each association,” the statement read.

Olumekun reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic process.

So far, the commission has received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties.
