The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended operations on the Warri-Itakpe rail corridor following a derailment incident that occurred just four days after the resumption of service on the route.

The train, which had seven coaches, derailed at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Kilometre 212+8m in Agbor, Delta State, with two coaches coming off the tracks.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the derailment may have been caused by suspected track vandalism. Fortunately, all passengers on board were safely evacuated to Agbor, and no casualties or injuries were recorded.

The NRC’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, explained that the decision to suspend service was taken as a precautionary measure to enable a comprehensive security and safety audit of the track and related infrastructure.

The Warri-Itakpe train service resumed operations on October 29, 2025, after a prolonged suspension due to technical issues. The suspension was initially planned for 72 hours but lasted over six months.

The NRC has assured the public that normal operations will resume once the route is confirmed safe.
