The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention is underway in Ibadan, Oyo State, amidst controversy and conflicting court orders.

Several high-profile members, including Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Sim Fubara (Rivers), are noticeably absent.

The convention’s legitimacy is in question following a Federal High Court order restraining the PDP from proceeding with the event, citing the exclusion of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido from the national chairmanship contest. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also announced it will not monitor the convention due to the court order.

The PDP is deeply divided, with factions loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and Acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum at odds.

Wike’s camp has urged members to boycott the convention, citing the court order, while Damagum’s faction insists it will proceed.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called for the convention’s suspension, proposing a caretaker committee to resolve the party’s internal disputes.

The PDP’s Board of Trustees has submitted a report recommending the convention’s continuation, but its legitimacy remains uncertain.
