Lawmakers in Benin on Saturday approved a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term from five to seven years and establishing an upper house of parliament.

The amendment retains the two-term limit for presidents. Current President Patrice Talon is set to step down next April after completing a decade in office, and Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, Talon’s endorsed candidate, is widely regarded as the frontrunner for the upcoming election.

The reform was passed with a significant majority in parliament, receiving 90 votes in favor and 19 against. The newly created senate will consist of at least 25 members, including appointees by the president and ex officio members such as former heads of state.
