A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment for terrorism.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, finding Kanu guilty on all seven counts, including inciting violence and ordering the killing of security personnel.
The court ruled that Kanu’s broadcasts on Radio Biafra constituted acts of terrorism, and his sit-at-home order in South-Eastern states violated citizens’ freedom of movement.
The Federal Government had sought the death penalty, but the court opted for life imprisonment instead.
Kanu’s conviction and sentencing stem from his activities as IPOB leader, which the court deemed terrorist acts against Nigeria.
The judgment was delivered in Kanu’s absence after he was removed from the courtroom for unruly behavior.
