Islamic State-linked rebels have killed 89 civilians, including at least 20 women and an undetermined number of children, in multiple attacks in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s Lubero territory.
The attacks, carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in North Kivu province between November 13 and 19, also involved abductions and looting of medical supplies.
In one attack, rebels targeted a Catholic Church-run health centre in Byambwe, killing 17 people, including women receiving maternity care, and setting four patient wards ablaze.
The UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, is urging Congolese authorities to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice.
