Malawi’s police are investigating the theft of four German Shepherds from the presidential palace in Lilongwe, with Godfrey Arthur Jalale, a former State House deputy chief of staff, arrested in connection with the crime.
The dogs, valued at $2,300, were taken between September 19 and October 4, during the transition period following former President Lazarus Chakwera’s election loss to President Peter Mutharika.
Chakwera has faced allegations of public resource mismanagement, and his party accuses Mutharika’s administration of harassment. Police have secured a search warrant for Chakwera’s residence, amid reports of stolen state property from two presidential residences.
