Sonia Dahmani, a prominent lawyer and vocal critic of President Kais Saied, has been freed from prison in Tunisia after serving a year and a half of her sentence.

Dahmani was jailed for criticizing the government’s stance on undocumented African migrants, with the court saying her comments had insulted the country and spread false information.

Her release has been welcomed by her family, activists, and the Journalists’ Syndicate, who are calling for the release of other detained critics and journalists.

Dahmani’s imprisonment was widely seen as part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Tunisia, with rights groups accusing Saied of using the judiciary and police to target opponents.

Saied has rejected these accusations, saying his actions are aimed at ending corruption and holding everyone accountable.
