President Bola Tinubu hailed the victory as a strong affirmation of Nigeria’s growing maritime influence and its constructive role in global shipping governance.

The re-election into Category C of the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium took place during the organisation’s General Assembly in London on November 28.

Tinubu expressed gratitude to member states for their support, pledging that Nigeria would justify the trust reposed in it through sustained leadership and active contribution to international maritime objectives.

The President commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for their dedication and professionalism throughout the election process.

The new mandate aligns with Tinubu’s administration drive to unlock Nigeria’s blue economy potential, expand maritime infrastructure, and strengthen anti-piracy initiatives.
