The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin to support efforts to restore peace and stability following last weekend’s attempted coup.
The Senate unanimously voted in favor of the deployment, giving legislative backing for the regional security intervention.
President Tinubu had cited Nigeria’s historical responsibility to support Benin under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) security frameworks, stating that the crisis demands “urgent external intervention” to prevent further breakdown of order.
The ECOWAS standby force, comprising troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana, will support the Government and Republican Army of Benin to preserve constitutional order and territorial integrity.
