Bayelsa State is observing a three-day mourning period following the sudden passing of Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed and died on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 60. Governor Douye Diri has declared the mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast across the state.
Ewhrudjakpo, a seasoned politician and public servant, had been actively engaged in official duties earlier that day before his untimely demise.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed profound grief, describing him as a “hero of political integrity” and a “trusted, faithful party man”.
The deputy governor’s death has been met with widespread condolences, including from the PDP National Working Committee, which praised his commitment to principled leadership and public service.
Ewhrudjakpo served as Deputy Governor since 2020, previously holding positions as Senator for Bayelsa West and Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.
