The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate widespread rumors on social media alleging the collapse and possible death of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The resolution followed a point of order raised by Senator Titus Zam, who described the rumors as “alarming and unacceptable”, emphasizing that Akpabio, as the nation’s number three citizen, should not be subjected to such misinformation.
Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the difficulty of controlling social media narratives, stating that people cannot be prevented from spreading false information.
The Senate subsequently adopted the proposal, resolving that the National Security Adviser investigate the source and intent of the rumors.
