A Ugandan prison officer, Lawrence Ampe, has been dismissed from his job for criticizing the government on TikTok, citing “gross indiscipline”.

Ampe, who had over 100,000 followers on the platform, used TikTok to expose senior government officials’ alleged corruption, human rights abuses, and mistreatment of lower-ranking officers.

He also promoted opposition leader Bobi Wine’s election campaign videos. The Uganda Prisons Service cited laws prohibiting public servants from participating in politics, stating Ampe was sacked for “politicking in the wrong forum”.

The opposition has condemned the move, describing it as “systemic oppression” and double standards within the security sector.

Ampe’s dismissal has sparked debate on free speech and political expression in Uganda, with concerns over government restrictions on criticism.
