The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to a massive influx of refugees into neighboring Burundi, with over 84,000 people fleeing this month alone.

This is the second major influx this year, and the country’s resources are being stretched to the limit. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, is calling for immediate global support to address the humanitarian emergency.

Refugees are arriving daily, often in poor condition, with limited access to food, water, and sanitation, leading to cholera outbreaks.

The fighting between Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and the Congolese army continues, despite a US-brokered peace deal signed in June. Rwanda denies supporting M23, but a UN report suggests otherwise.

The situation is dire, with refugees like Mapendo Malahaba, a 50-year-old mother of seven, separated from her children and struggling to survive.

Burundi, one of the world’s poorest countries, is appealing for $35 million to meet immediate needs.

However, prospects are uncertain due to reduced international aid.
