A drone attack launched from Sudan killed two Chadian soldiers and seriously injured another at a military camp near the border before dawn on Friday, escalating regional tensions.

Local authorities in the border town of Tine confirmed the casualties but could not identify who was behind the strike.

A Chadian military intelligence officer stated that while the drone originated from Sudan, it is still unclear whether it was launched by the country’s army or the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF).

The officer, who remained anonymous, declared that Chad’s air force base in Abéché is on high alert and that “if it is a Sudanese military drone, we will exercise our right to retaliate”.

The attack complicates an already fragile situation in Tine, which serves as a transit camp for refugees fleeing the war in Sudan, a conflict that has displaced over 12 million people.
