The Shitta-Bey family of Lagos, owners of Shitta-Bey Court, popularly known as the GNI Building, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent fire outbreak at the high-rise building, describing the incident as tragic and heartbreaking.
In a statement released on behalf of the family, the owners said their thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families affected by the fire.
They added that the family is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that those impacted receive all necessary support and assistance.
The family also addressed what it described as false narratives and misinformation allegedly being circulated by Great Nigeria Insurance Ltd. (GNI), a former tenant and caretaker of the property.
According to the statement, the building was under GNI’s management when it was gutted by fire in November 2013 and was subsequently left in a dangerous state for nearly six years.
The Shitta-Bey family said it only recovered possession of the property after an order of the High Court of Lagos State dated October 31, 2019, following which the building was rehabilitated.
Reassuring residents and stakeholders, the family stated that the building was adequately insured and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring both the structure and the mosque within the premises. The family said it would ensure that all safety measures are put in place ahead of the eventual return of residents.
The statement added that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
For further inquiries, the family directed members of the public to its solicitors, Adelaja Oguntimirin & Associates (Barristers and Solicitors), located at 4th Floor, Front Wing, 17/19 Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos State. The firm can also be reached via telephone on 08033314746.
