Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-backed party.

Obi announced his defection on Wednesday, December 31, in Enugu, describing the move as part of his vision to transform and “rescue” Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said. He also pledged to resist election rigging “by every lawful means” in 2027.

The former Anambra governor urged opposition leaders to unite under the leadership of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, to steer the country toward meaningful change.

The event was attended by notable political figures, including former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Enyinnya Abaribe, Senator Sam Egwu, and other legislators from the National Assembly, alongside former governors from the South-East.

Obi’s move signals a significant reshuffling of political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
