British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital after being involved in a tragic car accident in Nigeria on Monday that killed two of his close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver, though another report mentioned a burst tire as a potential cause.
Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach of over a decade, and Ayodele, his personal trainer, were killed in the crash.
After being released from the hospital on Wednesday, a “heavy-hearted” Joshua and his mother visited the funeral home to pay their respects as his friends were being prepared for repatriation.
Tributes have poured in from the boxing community and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who confirmed he spoke with Joshua to offer his condolences.
