The death toll from the Christmas Eve fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island has risen to at least six, with recovery operations still underway eight days after the blaze began

The Lagos State Government confirmed that another body was recovered from the rubble of the 25-story building, which was ravaged by a fire that started on December 24 and led to a partial collapse.

According to official figures, three victims were burnt beyond recognition, while 13 people, including a firefighter, sustained injuries.

As emergency responders continue to search the site, families are desperately seeking information about their loved ones, with one man reporting that his three brothers are missing and presumed dead in the disaster.

Unofficial accounts from the scene suggest the number of people trapped or killed could be much higher, with some estimates reaching as many as 50.

In response to the compromised structure, the state government has also ordered the immediate evacuation of all buildings within a 100-meter radius of the site due to safety concerns.
