In a major political realignment, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Mutfwang received his APC membership card today, Friday, January 2, 2026, during a stakeholders’ meeting at Victoria Gowon Hall in Jos, sealing weeks of speculation about his political future.
The governor explained that his decision was a strategic move made in the best interest of Plateau State, aimed at aligning with the federal government to accelerate development and improve service delivery.
In his resignation letter to the PDP dated December 29, 2025, Mutfwang cited a need for “purposeful leadership and clarity of direction” as a key reason for seeking a new political platform.
At the event, he thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support and pledged to back his re-election bid in 2027, urging any skeptics of his move to “be patient” as “time will reveal everything”.
The defection had been anticipated since the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, first announced it during a party caucus meeting on December 18, 2025.
Mutfwang’s switch is a significant victory for the APC, which now governs the entire North-central geopolitical zone.
The state chapter of the APC has welcomed the governor, promising to give him the necessary support to succeed.
