The son of Sudan’s army chief and de facto leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been reportedly hospitalised in Turkey.

Mohammed Fattah al-Burhan Rahmane found himself in a distressing situation when his motorcycle collided with a utility vehicle in Ankara on Thursday, propelling him several metres from his bike.

Swiftly transported to a hospital, he was admitted to intensive care for the injuries sustained in the accident. Despite the severity of the incident, the Sudanese embassy in Ankara remained silent, offering no immediate response to inquiries.

This incident unfolds amidst the ongoing hostilities that have persisted since April between Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The genesis of their dispute traces back to a joint military coup in 2021 that disrupted Sudan’s delicate transition toward democracy, sparking a rift between the two generals.

The toll of this internal strife has been devastating, claiming tens of thousands of lives, with a staggering number of casualties, up to 15,000, reported in a single West Darfur town, as per United Nations experts.

Beyond the human tragedy, the conflict has inflicted extensive damage on the economy, obliterated vital infrastructure, and displaced over eight million people from their homes, according to UN statistics.
