Sudan’s military-led government has officially returned to the nation’s capital, Khartoum, after operating from a wartime base in Port Sudan for nearly three years.

The government was forced to relocate in 2023 when civil war broke out between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which seized control of the city.

The army’s recapture of Khartoum last March paved the way for this return to a capital left in ruins by the conflict, which saw roughly five million people flee.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced that the “government of hope” would immediately begin efforts to restore basic services like electricity, water, and healthcare, and declared 2026 a “year of peace” for a country where the war has killed at least 150,000 people and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
