Ugandan President Yoweriraf President Yoweri Museveni is seeking a seventh term in office, with partial results giving him a strong lead.

According to the electoral commission, Museveni has 76% of the votes, based on returns from 45% of the country’s polling stations. Opposition leader Bobi Wine, a 43-year-old pop star-turned-politician, is trailing with 20% of the votes.

Security forces have surrounded Wine’s home in the capital, Kampala, with his party claiming they are effectively placing him and his wife under house arrest.

The police have denied these allegations, stating that the security deployment is for Wine’s own safety.

The election has been marked by tensions, with Wine alleging “massive” fraud and the government imposing an internet blackout, which has been condemned by the UN human rights office.

The final presidential result is expected to be announced by Saturday afternoon.
