A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Nenadi Usman-led national caretaker committee is the authentic leadership of the Labour Party (LP).
Judge Peter Lifu directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Usman-led wing of the party, citing that Julius Abure’s tenure as national chairman has elapsed. This decision reaffirms the Supreme Court’s verdict, which voided the Court of Appeal’s order recognizing Abure as the party’s chairman.
The LP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since 2023, with two factions – Abure’s and the Usman-led committee – battling for control.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who belonged to the Usman faction, recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
