US YouTube sensation IShowSpeed on Wednesday visited Lagos, Nigeria’s cultural and economic hub, as part of his ongoing African tour, marking the occasion by celebrating his 21st birthday and reaching 50 million subscribers on his YouTube channel.

The YouTube and Twitch star, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., began his Africa tour on December 29, travelling across about 15 countries and drawing large crowds at each stop. His growing influence recently earned him the title of Most Influential Creator of 2025 by Rolling Stone magazine, while Forbes estimates his net worth at around $20 million.

IShowSpeed kicked off his Lagos experience at the busy Balogun Market on Lagos Island, where he was mobbed by excited onlookers who shouted comments and asked for money. Visibly overwhelmed, the streamer, surrounded by bodyguards, joked about struggling to understand the local accent before quickly exiting the market.

He later visited Freedom Park, a former colonial prison turned cultural centre, where he sampled jollof rice for the first time, reacting dramatically to its spicy kick. His tour of the city also included a stop at the famous Nike Art Gallery, a popular destination for celebrities and dignitaries visiting Lagos.

“IShowSpeed is showcasing culture, relationships, cultural differences and food,” said 24-year-old YouTuber Stephen Oluwafisayomi, also known as Stevosky. “He wants Americans to see Africa as a place they can also come to.”

At about 6:00 pm, the influencer paused his security convoy by the roadside to watch his channel hit the 50-million-subscriber milestone. To celebrate, he plunged his face into a birthday cake as fans cheered.

Another observer, 18-year-old student Karim Jari, said the content creator’s approach could have a positive impact. “He may show some negative aspects of these countries, but that can motivate people to help, invest and contribute to improvement,” he said.

A day earlier, IShowSpeed had been in Dakar, where he joined celebrations following Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.

Born in Cincinnati, Watkins began building an online following about a decade ago, initially through video game content before expanding into travel and lifestyle streaming. His African tour has included headline-grabbing moments such as racing a cheetah in South Africa, playing football with 100 children in Angola, visiting Kenya’s Maasai community and attending the AFCON final in Morocco.
