A notorious Tanzanian drug trafficker, Ahmed Muharram, has been arrested in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, along with several other suspects, as part of a major crackdown on drug trafficking.

The Zambian Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) seized large quantities of marijuana and cough syrup containing codeine during the raids.

Muharram, 40, is believed to be a key player in a transnational drug trafficking network and had been on the DEC’s watchlist for some time.

The authorities found 1,380.8kg of high-grade cannabis hidden in a lorry and at Muharram’s residence, as well as 55 boxes of Benylin containing codeine.

The DEC said it was committed to ensuring Zambia is not used as a hub for drug trafficking and that all suspects would face justice.

The arrests demonstrate Zambia’s efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking, a major challenge in the southern African country.
