The United Nations, the United States, and Türkiye have strongly condemned the recent attacks in Kwara State, which killed at least 75 people and left many others injured.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the violence as “heinous” and extended his condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Nigeria. He wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The US Embassy in Nigeria expressed shock over the attack, which it said claimed the lives of more than 160 people, while noting that the death toll remains unconfirmed. The statement welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s directive to deploy security forces to protect communities and provide aid to victims.

Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attack, calling it “heinous,” and pledged continued support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

In response, the Nigerian Police Force has deployed tactical, operational, and intelligence units to Kaiama Local Government Area. The IGP confirmed a manhunt is underway for the perpetrators.

The attacks, carried out by gunmen in Woro and neighboring Nuku communities on Tuesday, resulted in the burning of shops, a traditional ruler’s residence, and mass displacement of residents. Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq described the incident as a “pure massacre,” confirming that at least 75 victims have been buried.

President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of an army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield to reinforce security in the state. Political groups, including a faction of the PDP and the Northern States Governors’ Forum, condemned the killings, labeling them barbaric and a sign of worsening insecurity in the region.
