The National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are set to propose new dates for the 2027 elections, citing concerns over the initial dates coinciding with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The proposed new dates are January 16, 2027, for the presidential election and January 30, 2027, for the governorship polls, according to insiders within the electoral body and federal legislature.
The decision follows widespread criticism from Muslim groups and political stakeholders, who argued that conducting elections during Ramadan could suppress voter turnout among Muslims.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar publicly criticized the initial timing, warning that it could affect meaningful participation during a period traditionally devoted to fasting and spiritual reflection.
The National Assembly has convened an emergency plenary session to reconsider the election timetable, with lawmakers expected to debate the proposal.
INEC has assured the public that it remains sensitive to concerns and will ensure that any adjustments align with constitutional and statutory requirements.
