Nigeria’s para-badminton star and Olympic medallist, Eniola Bolaji, has risen to the top of the women’s SL3 world rankings following her impressive performances at recent international tournaments.

Bolaji claimed the World No. 1 spot after a silver medal finish at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship in Bahrain, where she lost 2–0 (21–12, 21–17) in the final to Japan’s Shino Kawai, ranked seventh globally, at the New Capital Hall on February 14.
Her ascent was further strengthened by her successful title defense at the Egypt International in January, marking her second consecutive victory at the event. Bolaji dethroned Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh from the top of the SL3 rankings.

Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, described Bolaji’s rise as a landmark achievement for both Nigeria and Africa, reflecting the results of structured investment and support for para-badminton in the country.
“This is the biggest news of the year — Eniola Bolaji claiming the World No. 1 spot following her participation in the 2024 Paralympic Games. She would likely have reached this ranking earlier if she had competed in more tournaments last year,” Orbih said.

He added that Bolaji’s momentum has been sustained through consistent performances, noting her participation in two major tournaments this year. Orbih also acknowledged the crucial support from key stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission, the Abia State Government, and GIG Logistics, for creating an environment that allows Nigerian para-badminton athletes to excel globally.
“This achievement underscores the importance of dedicated backing for para-badminton, enabling our athletes to train, compete, and succeed on the world stage,” Orbih said
