The driver involved in the car crash that left British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua injured and claimed the lives of two of his team members has appeared before a court in Nigeria.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State on Wednesday over the December 29 accident near Lagos. The crash resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami.

Joshua, 36, sustained injuries in the collision and was hospitalised but discharged two days later.

Prosecutors charged Kayode, 46, with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s licence. The court adjourned the case until March 13 to allow the prosecution more time to prepare its evidence.

The fatal accident occurred when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary lorry along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in south-west Nigeria. Ayodele and Ghami were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kayode, who made his second court appearance on Wednesday, has yet to enter a plea.
