DR Congo government forces launched a military offensive against the M23 rebel group in the eastern region of the country, employing drones to target a strategic mining site controlled by the Rwanda-backed fighters, security sources told AFP on Wednesday.

The latest clashes focused on areas around the mining town of Rubaya, where government forces had already carried out a drone strike against M23 positions the day before, according to local and security officials.

The operation highlights ongoing tensions in eastern DR Congo, where M23 rebels have continued to challenge state authority and occupy key economic sites. Security sources indicate that the government aims to regain control of these territories and weaken the group’s operational capabilities.

The situation remains fluid, with local residents reporting heightened military activity and concerns over potential civilian impacts from the conflict.
