Full rehabilitation works on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are set to resume on Wednesday, following a temporary suspension due to severe traffic congestion.

The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Layi Komolafe, announced that the replacement of expansion joints on the section of the bridge outward Lagos is necessary and cannot be delayed further.

In a statement issued on Monday, Komolafe sought the cooperation of relevant traffic management agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos State Police Command, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), to manage the expected traffic build-up.

He noted that the congestion would likely impact vehicular movement within Lagos and appealed to motorists to comply with traffic directives during the period of the repairs.

However, there are concerns over whether the work will resume as scheduled. Some FRSC officials have reportedly expressed uncertainty about the Wednesday timeline.

Last month, the FRSC indicated that repairs on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway could take between six weeks and two months to complete. The Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Ganiyu Hamzat, explained that certain sections require adequate time to seal properly to ensure durability.

Hamzat also noted that damaged portions of the road have contributed to accidents, as motorists attempting to avoid bad spots often collide with other vehicles.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, serving as a major link between Lagos and several regions across the country.
