Congolese soldiers and pro-government militia have re-entered the eastern town of Uvira, over a month after it fell to Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.
The town’s capture had dealt a blow to peace efforts mediated by the US, and raised fears of regional spillover from the conflict.
M23 had pledged to withdraw from Uvira to give peace talks a chance, but fighting and looting continue on the outskirts.
The Congolese government has accused M23 of looting, while Rwanda denies backing the rebels.
African leaders have called for the resumption of Doha talks to address the conflict, which has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands in eastern Congo.
