A four-storey school building in Ogba, Lagos, collapsed on Monday, but students and teachers narrowly escaped death after being evacuated minutes earlier.
The building, which housed Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, gave way at 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda area.
Residents said the structure had shown signs of distress, with wooden planks falling from the roof and cracks appearing on the walls.
An elderly man alerted school authorities, prompting a quick evacuation.
“The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” a resident said.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service officials secured the scene, and no casualties were reported. The cause of the collapse is unknown, and an official statement from the service is awaited.
