At least three people have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed near Oninku Park in Tema Community One in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, sparking an emergency response from security agencies and aviation authorities.
According to initial reports, the aircraft went down near the park area, prompting swift intervention from security personnel who arrived at the scene and cordoned off the crash site while investigations commenced.
Local media outlet The State News first reported the incident in a post on X, noting that authorities had secured the area after the fatal crash. The platform stated that security operatives moved in quickly to control the scene while emergency responders attended to the situation.
Early reports had initially described the aircraft as a plane. However, later updates confirmed that the aircraft involved in the crash was a helicopter.
Another media platform, CDR Africa, later clarified the development, stating that emergency teams were working at the scene while officials began preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash.
Residents and passersby were seen gathering around the cordoned-off area as security personnel worked to manage the crowd and ensure safety at the crash site.
The incident has revived memories of a major aviation tragedy that struck Ghana in August 2025, when a military helicopter crash claimed the lives of several high-profile officials, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, alongside six others, including members of the air force crew.
Following that crash, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Ghana Armed Forces had launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disaster.
