The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed that the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will take place as scheduled on March 29 and 30.

Wike expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness for the convention, which is expected to attract about 2,500 delegates, and downplayed internal disagreements and ongoing legal challenges.

Speaking after inspecting the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, the convention venue, Wike emphasized that efforts to reconcile aggrieved members will continue beyond the convention.

He dismissed the appeal filed at the Supreme Court by the Tanimu Turaki group, insisting that it would not affect the planned convention.

Wike expressed optimism about the party’s future, declaring that the PDP would surprise Nigerians in the next general elections.

He highlighted the party’s zoning arrangements, stating that positions had been distributed across regions to ensure balance and consensus.

The presidency has been zoned to the South, while the chairmanship is zoned to the North.

The convention comes against the backdrop of a protracted leadership crisis that has plagued the party since November 2025.

The PDP has been divided into factions, with some members backing the Ibadan convention that produced Kabiru Turaki and others supporting a caretaker committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman.
