Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to impose a sole presidential candidate on Nigerians in the 2027 elections.

Momodu’s remarks were made in response to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognizing a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while derecognizing the ADC’s leadership led by David Mark.

Momodu criticized INEC’s decision, describing the electoral body as a “debilitating albatross” for the country. He drew parallels between Tinubu’s actions and the Abacha era, stating that the ultimate goal is to produce a sole candidate in 2027.

The ADC chieftain also expressed concerns about the ruling party’s attempts to coerce governors and weaken opposition parties.

The ADC has vowed to resist plots by anti-democratic forces within the ruling party to end competitive democracy in Nigeria.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that the APC is planning to impose Tinubu as the sole presidential contender in 2027.

Momodu has suggested that a strong Northern candidate, such as Atiku Abubakar, could effectively challenge Tinubu in 2027.

He emphasized the importance of coalition politics and strategic thinking in defeating the ruling party.
