A separatist alliance in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions has announced a three-day ceasefire from April 15 to 17 to allow civilians and visitors to move freely during Pope Leo XIV’s visit.
The pope is expected in the Anglophone city of Bamenda on April 16 as part of his 10-day tour across four African countries.
The ceasefire, described as a “safe travel passage,” aims to ensure a secure environment for civilians, pilgrims, and dignitaries attending the pope’s events.
The alliance, comprising the Ambazonia Governing Council (AGovC) and other separatist movements, urged all parties to respect the ceasefire period.
This move comes amid ongoing conflict between secessionist militias and government troops in western Cameroon, which has killed thousands since 2017.
The pope’s visit is seen as a humanitarian and security measure to safeguard civilian life and promote peace.
