No fewer than 3,000 delegates have converged on the Rainbow Event Centre for the ongoing national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The delegates, drawn from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, arrived in colourful attire, reflecting the party’s nationwide presence and diversity.

Security was tight at the venue, with personnel conducting thorough checks before granting access, as accreditation commenced under the supervision of the accreditation sub-committee chaired by Austin Akobundu.

Speaking at the event, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, said delegate allocation was based on the size of each state to ensure fair representation.

Idigo, however, expressed concern over difficulties encountered in securing a suitable venue for the convention, alleging that several private facility owners declined to host the party due to external pressure and threats.

According to him, requests to use Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium were unsuccessful, while other venues reportedly withdrew after learning the event was for the ADC.

He added that even the Rainbow Event Centre initially attempted to cancel the booking but the party insisted on proceeding, having fulfilled all payment obligations.

Idigo described the situation as a challenge to free enterprise, noting that such pressures could discourage businesses and result in financial losses.

He stated that the convention would conclude the party’s congresses, ratify a new constitution, and lay the groundwork for its upcoming primaries.
