The Ogun State Government will file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, driver of the stationary truck involved in the December 2025 road crash that killed two of Anthony Joshua’s close associates.
During proceedings on Thursday, Ogun State Senior Counsel D.O. Ogunyomi took over the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, who was driving the Lexus SUV that was conveying Joshua and his friends. Ogunyomi asked the court to consolidate charges against both drivers — Adamu and Kayode.
Legal advice from the Ogun Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), read in court, recommended that Kayode be tried for reckless driving alongside the truck driver. Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun approved the consolidation request. The case was adjourned to June 2, 2026.
Background
On December 29, 2025, the SUV carrying Joshua, a former world heavyweight boxing champion, and two associates crashed into a stationary truck near the Sinoma area, Sagamu, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The group was traveling from Lagos to Sagamu when the collision occurred.
Joshua survived with minor injuries, but his longtime friend and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, and personal trainer Kevin Latif Ayodele, died.
The Case
Police later arrested Kayode for his role as driver of the SUV. The Ogun police command filed a four-count charge against him, including dangerous driving causing death and reckless and negligent driving. The case was forwarded to the Ogun DPP.
At a March 17 hearing, DPP counsel R.D. Kadiri told the court his team received new information to incorporate into the case and sought more time. Counsel to Kayode, Abiodun Olalekan, raised concerns over what he described as “delay tactics” by the prosecution.
