The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for independent investigations into reports that Nigerian airstrikes on a market killed at least 100 civilians, while separate Chadian airstrikes in Nigeria reportedly claimed the lives of dozens of fishermen.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Türk described the incidents as disturbing and urged both countries to ensure accountability.

“It is crucial that both Nigerian and Chadian authorities conduct prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigations into these disturbing incidents and ensure that those responsible for any violations are held to account, in accordance with international standards,” he said.

The UN rights chief stressed the need for transparency and adherence to international human rights and humanitarian laws during military operations.
