Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has been cleared to contest in the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.
The NDC National Screening Committee chairman, Sam Egwu, announced the clearance on Wednesday in a video posted on the party’s official X account. The screening took place in Abuja on Tuesday.
Egwu said Obi met all constitutional and statutory requirements, including those under the party constitution, the Electoral Act, and the 1999 Constitution. He added that Obi provided satisfactory answers to the committee’s questions and is now eligible to contest the party’s primary on dates yet to be announced.
Obi confirmed the process on his X account, stating that the screening lasted over two and a half hours. He said the committee reviewed his academic and NYSC documents, age declarations, and questioned him on his vision for Nigeria. He was subsequently issued the presidential nomination form he had paid for.
Obi joined the NDC on May 3 after leaving both the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress. The party has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South for a single four-year term, with the presidency expected to rotate to the North in 2031.
The NDC has scheduled its presidential and other primaries for May 27-29, 2026, in Abuja.
