The All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has postponed its governorship primary from Thursday to Friday, May 22, 2026.
The new date was announced in a notice issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Abdulwaheed Babatunde. No official reason was given for the postponement.
State party chairman Sunday Fagbemi confirmed the shift and said the decision followed instructions from the APC national team. “We don’t have details for the cancellation other than the fact that the team from the national office came and instructed that the election be held tomorrow,” he told reporters.
Hours before the postponement, eight aspirants stepped down and declared support for Abdulfatai Seriki, who is seen as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s preferred successor. Seriki met with fellow aspirants and stakeholders on Wednesday evening, where they agreed to back his candidature to promote unity and continuity.
Those who pledged support include Salako Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Wale Sulaiman, Mohammed Bio, Toyin Alabi, Aisha Patigi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, and House of Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi.
The meeting ended with a commitment to party cohesion and a peaceful primary process. More aspirants are expected to step down ahead of the vote.
The APC is holding governorship and legislative primaries across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is currently serving his second term in Kwara.
