The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Mrs Grace Ogunleye, has been rescued unhurt days after she was abducted by unknown gunmen.
Ogunleye was kidnapped on Wednesday along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road while travelling. Her vehicle was later found abandoned by the roadside, and her phone was switched off, making contact difficult.
Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer Sunday Abutu confirmed her release on Thursday. He said she was rescued alive and unhurt following a joint operation by the police, military, other security agencies, and local security personnel.
“The breakthrough came as a result of a joint operation by the police, the military and other security agencies as well as local security personnel, who embarked on a rescue mission and mounted pressure on the hoodlums,” Abutu said.
State Commissioner of Police Michael Falade has ordered a full investigation into the abduction and those behind it.
The incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Ekiti, particularly on rural roads. It follows an attack on April 28 in the same local government area, when gunmen stormed a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo, killing the pastor and abducting about 15 worshippers. Those worshippers remain in captivity, according to authorities.
