The Nigeria Democratic Congress has selected Aminu Gwarzo, former deputy governor of Kano State, as its governorship candidate for the upcoming elections.
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s leader and 2023 presidential candidate, announced the decision on Friday via X. He said the choice was made in the spirit of equity, loyalty, and competence.
Kwankwaso also said Nasiru Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress candidate in the 2023 Kano governorship election, would contest for the Kano Central senatorial seat under the NDC.
Gwarzo joined the NDC in May after resigning from the African Democratic Congress. He had earlier moved to the ADC from the New Nigeria People’s Party in April. Gawuna also joined the NDC in May after leaving the ADC.
Kwankwaso and former Anambra governor Peter Obi joined the NDC from the ADC earlier in May, citing consultations and concerns over the party’s direction.
The NDC said it would hold primaries on Friday to confirm consensus candidates for various positions.
