Nigerian troops working with US Africa Command killed 21 Islamic State West Africa Province fighters in an airstrike on Saturday, security sources said.
The strike hit an ISWAP camp in Arege, Kukawa LGA, Borno State, after surveillance confirmed militants were gathering there. Counter-insurgency outlet Zagazola Makama reported the target was a camp where the group planned attacks around Lake Chad.
According to Makama, the precision strike killed 21 fighters and disrupted ISWAP operations in the area. Security sources described the mission as intelligence-led and carefully executed.
The operation is part of ongoing US-Nigeria coordination to weaken extremist networks in the North East. Military officials said it shows growing cooperation between Nigerian forces and international partners against terrorism.
The latest strike follows similar joint airstrikes in Metele, Borno, that killed more than 20 ISWAP fighters weeks earlier. Officials expect continued pressure on insurgent groups around Lake Chad as the groups try to regroup and target communities.
