Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, former vice-chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has passed away at 68.
The university confirmed his death in a statement Saturday. Kunle Akogun, UNILORIN’s director of corporate affairs, said current VC Wahab Olasupo Egbewole announced that Ambali died in the early hours at his Oloje estate residence in Ilorin after a brief illness.
Ambali led UNILORIN as its 9th vice-chancellor from 2012 to 2017. At the time of his death, he was serving as pro-chancellor and chairman of Kwara State University, Malete.
Egbewole described the loss as “huge” for UNILORIN, KWASU, Kwara State, and Nigeria. The Janazah prayer for the late scholar is scheduled for 4pm today, Saturday June 6, 2026, at his Oloje estate home.
Born November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, Ambali attended Pakata Primary School and Government Secondary School, Jalingo. He earned his DVM from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981, then an MSc and PhD in veterinary medicine from the University of Liverpool.
He taught at the University of Maiduguri before returning to UNILORIN, where he became a professor of veterinary medicine and the pioneer dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
May his soul rest in peace.
